All I can say is your reading the wrong Forum--there isn't anyone here that ONLY bashes Jerry...and you're wrong about how he'd take over-hearing a conversation about his faults. As one who has lived thru those issues precisely, and having read a bit he'd written, he was certainly self aware enough to want the cold truth about his mistakes rather than uncritical meaningless praise. He got enough pats on the back to know the difference between what matters and what doesn't when it comes to what others have to say about your own self worth.

That's the way I think he'd have seen it.

not once would ever have given "meaningless praise"...but i certaintly never gave up on him.i know exactly how difficult it is to give up heroin and also know that after a certain amount of time on it that it gets in the way of the most important things in your life and theres nothing you can do about it.he cleaned up 3 times that i know of from 85 on including his last stint in serenity knolls.he was doin the right thing, unforntantly too late....i really dont know how else to explain it,i`ve read numerous reviews from people who said that jerry himself was so terrible that they wish they hadn`t even of gone to the show...whats that all about? ..he just ment a lot more to me than that..i would never say he got enough pats on the back for something like that..thats a horrible statement!

That came off poorly--my phrase about "meaningless praise". I, like you, have lots and lots of--lets say, "meaningful praise"...it's why I consider him one of the all time greats, in any respect, of musical talents.

But, I felt the notion that he "deserves" nothing BUT praise is always misplaced...no one does. It's not part of the Human Condition.

We've all been over it a thousand times; we all have faults, and those in the Public Eye show them for one and all, and if they're at all self analytical (and Jerry was enlightened enough, to be sure), they take the good with the bad, and accept it with as much grace and dignity as they can muster.

But, only the superficial and naive would ever want nothing but praise, nor want someone telling others "hey, if you don't have anything but good things to say, STFU!" which is how I interpreted your post.

If on the other hand, you were just lamenting someone that ten posts in a row happened to lament Jerry's degradation, then at least take the broad view of that poster, and for my two cents worth, there isn't ANYONE here that ONLY does that...

Heroin? CIGARETTES killed Jerry Garcia. Only the blind man didn't see the ashtray sitting on top of his amplifier. He was chain smoking the government's lousy drug from the beginning to the end of the show. That included indoor arenas with a no smoking policy. Causes of death; were emphysema and cardiac arrest. These are the first things to kill a nicotine addicts. Giving up the cigs is harder than getting off of heroin for lots of people...

smoking persian won't give you emphysema? I don't suppose the ding dongs and yohoo's he munched after getting baked didn't contribute to his diabities either.

just finished Tom Davis 's autobiography, he was the other half of the comedy team Franken and Davis, I don't know why Tom felt the need to drop the dirt, but without going into it he confirmed my greatest fear, Jerry was an unabashed, unappologetic junkie, I love his musi, but he let the dope have its way , http://search.barnesandnoble.com/39-Years-of-Short-Term-Memory-Loss/Tom-Davis/e/9780802118806

i think most of those people your referring to were just kinda sad and disappointed in the latter day jerry. probably hurt them to go and see jerry in his condition. his voice was bad, and his playing was poor, for his standards. they knew the end was near, and it was. i've tried to listen to 94 and 95, but i can't. just not very good. sugarcoat it if you dare, but you won't convince me.

again im not making any excuses for some sloppy music during the latter years and i dont have to sugarcoat shit, because there are plenty of nights that the music speaks for itself in the 90s....some of their best shows ever came from 88-91.Jerry of course was on the straight and narrow during that run...and anyway all this is steming from my 1st statement of saying more or less, give him the the credit he deserves, how it got to a debate over when the best music was played,i dont know.

"some of their best shows ever came from 88-91"

This statement could not be any further from the truth. There are probably 10-15 shows from 78-91 that even come close to standing up next to many, many shows previous to those time periods.

Everyone likes the version of the band that they like, and best of this and that is certainly subjective. But no objective listener can say that the band was more creative or executed more precisely in the years following 77.

my statement of saying that some of the best music from Jerry and the band,is not only my opinion, but was also the opinion of Blair Jackson. From his book"GARCIA-an american life,"Blair aslo stated that "some of the best playing of Garcia`s career ocurred between 1988 and the spring of 1990,and the rest of the band was right there with him-always getting stronger, constantly upping the intensity level of the whole." ......so instead of just trying to bang into peoples head that the Dead were only worth lstening to in the 70s,which i can say were full of unbelievable moments of fabulous music, try listening for the way band tremendously improved from 84-86 to the way they played in latter years of the 80s.

(the quote from Blair Jacksons book "Garcia-an american life,"was taken from page 385 about halfway down the page if intrested.)
